popo

For those who do not know Mr. Popo is a minor character in the anime show Dragon Ball Z. On the show, he is a gene, a friend to the Z fighters, and is the servant to Kami the guardian of Earth. Sounds innocent enough, but the truth is that Mr. Popo is just a modern day minstrel, a coon, and a sambo or to put it plainly a plain racist images and I am shocked to see him on the air. Now I know some of you reading this may think I am over reacting and would say that this is only a cartoon character or that Mr. Popo is not really Black (well not racially any way). To them I say your right in the fact that it is just a cartoon show, but the truth is that this is an image that gets in grained into the children that watched the show and effects what they think of themselves and other people. Just as the same types of images effect people years ago, when it was thought to be ok and the norm to put them in public. Therefore, you end up having little Black children thinking that they are ugly, inferior and less then human and little White kids thinking that they are better then the Black kids. In addition, to those who say the character is not really supposed to be Negroid but a genie, I say your right in the fact that popo is a genie and doesn’t really look like a real Black person, but he does look like the many racist images that are supposed to be Black people.

Moreover, if that is not enough the American voice actor makes the character sound like the famous minstrel performer Jolson, and I almost expect Mr. Popo to break out in to a "I love you mammy” type skit every time he says Kami’s name. When Akira Toriyama came up with the character he most likely influenced by old cartoon and images that showed racist images of Blacks and though saddened to see that he put the character in the manga in the first place I am even more surprised that the character made it into the show. I mean they could have easily edit him out (like they did launch) or just edit the way he look (change is color, make him green, blue orange or something, just not black or brown) and not go with the style of dialogue used for the character.
